Enchanting Abacos

The Abaco Islands are part of the Bahamas, a vast archipelago located off the coast of Florida that has more than 700 islands, some of which are inhabited but, for the most part, totally free from human settlements.

The Abaco Islands are located in the northernmost part, east of Grand Bahama Island and north of New Providence Island, where the capital Nassau is located. This small archipelago includes two main islands, Great Abaco and Little Abaco, and other small atolls scattered off the coast of an area nearly 130 miles wide. The main and best-known settlements are Walker’s Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Grande Guana, Man-O-War, and Elbow Cay.

What do they have in common? They are all characterized by incredible landscapes surrounded by deep blue bays, tongues of sand that emerge from the water, colorful wooden buildings, and a detached and relaxed atmosphere.

Who do we recommend this type of trip to?

A trip to the Abaco Islands on a yacht charter is suitable for everyone. Especially for those looking for fun and relaxation away from the most classic and crowded destinations. Among these islets, you will discover the true exotic nature of the Bahamas, leaving for a classy journey but at the same time with a wild and uncontaminated flavor.

7 Days yacht charter itinerary around the Abacos Islands

Below, here is one of the possible week-long yacht charter itineraries to discover the Abacos Islands!

Day One

During day one of your week’s yacht charter itinerary in the Abacos, Bahamas, you will begin in Elbow Cay. There is a candy-striped lighthouse here, and the entertainment is not to be missed. The nightlife is some of the finest in the area.

Your first day on Abacos’ yacht charter itinerary begins at Elbow Cay.

Located nearly 100 miles north of Nassau, tiny Elbow Cay sits on the western side of Great Abaco and welcomes its visitors with the photogenic Hope Town Lighthouse. The same name town is a tiny village made of wooden cottages and surrounded by green nature.

Located right in front of Marsh Harbor, Elbow Cay Bahamas has become a symbol within the Bahamas.

In addition to visiting the famous Hope Town lighthouse, its candy cane-looking structure is one of the only lighthouses in the Caribbean still operated manually, and it is possible to visit it by climbing its steps to the top; during your stay, you can decide to practice deep sea fishing: you can usually find Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Blackfin tuna, and even dolphin. It is best to go with a local who can put you on top of the fish and where they like to feed.

Otherwise, you can relax on the beautiful Tahiti Beach, hidden on the southwestern tip of the island and often deserted or uncrowded, offering wonderful blue-colored water.

Day Two

Next up, you will hit the Man-O-War Cay. You will see a lot of traditional architecture and plenty of exotic animals that dwell in crystal-clear waters. This is why it is a good idea to see the Abacos Islands by yacht.

When the American colonies defeated the British in the US Revolutionary War, some loyalists fled the country and hid in these areas. Man-O-War Cay is one of the first loyalist settlements in the Abacos, and, starting in 1798, its residents began to cultivate various plantations, which are still widespread on the island today.

A walk through this picturesque, peaceful, and well-kept community will immerse you in its history, which is still alive today, preserved, and celebrated by the residents. A population of a few hundred people closely linked to the traditions and customs of a by now remote era.

Day Three

Green Turtle Bay is named after the many green turtles in the area and is a must-see destination if you are an animal lover. In addition to turtles, in the waters of this island, it is easy to spot swordfish and even dolphins.

This long, narrow island is also renowned for its unique architecture, influenced by colonial and New England styles. The island offers beautiful beaches, a boat repair yard, and numerous amenities such as shops and restaurants. During your stay, you can rent a golf cart or a bicycle and easily reach any destination.

The main village is New Plymouth, and many of its inhabitants can trace their origins to loyalist ancestors who fled to the island after the American Revolution. The village resembles an old English fishing port, with quaint timber-clad cottages and fences.

Day Four

During your 7-day sailing itinerary to Abacos Islands, you can witness local artists while also being able to shop for local trinkets. Many pieces of crafted jewelry and porpoises swim in the ocean. The fourth day of your yacht charter itinerary in the Abacos Islands will be dedicated to chilling and fun. You can choose whether to attend shows by local artists or go shopping in the best locations where you can buy local artifacts or souvenirs such as local jewels. Alternatively, you can spend the day aboard your private yacht enjoying its water games made available to you and your loved ones or sipping cocktails while relaxing in the sun on the deck.

Day Five

The Great Guana Cay is a remote island, and it is home to 150 people. Even though it is a small island, it is known as the party center of the area. It is famous for its rum cocktails that you can sip on the beach, and if you are an avid bird watcher, you may even find that you can spot a white-crowned pigeon or two.

Day Six and Day Seven

As the last stop, Treasure Cay is certainly the best place in the entire Abacos archipelago to relax and rest.

It may seem surprising to you, but Treasure Cay is not a real Cay! Rather it is the name of a part of the island of Great Abaco where there are famous resorts and luxurious villas for sale. This area is also served by a convenient airport.

Its beach boasts the most beautiful crescent-shaped white sand strip of all the Abacos and is often listed in the top 10 in the world!

Within the Treasure Cay Resort and Marina area, there are swimming pools, bars and restaurants, souvenir shops, grocery stores, and bakeries. If you are interested, here is a wide range of properties for rent and for sale, grouped according to different architectural styles, such as villas, townhouses, condominiums, and single-family homes.

We are sure this is the best place for you to spend the last hours of your yacht charter stay in the Abaco Islands, but if not, you are free to modify your itinerary as you see fit. You just have to ask!
